Rule based Data Annotation

Semi-automated rule based data annotation is a frequent pattern that emerges in all kinds of user interfaces. The example that is probably the most wide-spread is email filtering, where a user sorts incoming email into different folders on their system. Typically this is a process that necessarily contains manual decisions done by the user on a case by case basis, while also some email can be categorised automatically by applying rules. For the user to be able to define helpful filtering rules, the interface needs to be expressive enough to allow for different use-cases, while being restricted enough to not result in filtering rules that are impossible to apply.

In this thesis I investigate this data annotation workflow and how the user interface for designing the filtering rules can be built. My software implementation will be able to sort bookkeeping transactions into different account names, as it is a typical workflow for the bookkeeping department in small associations and corporations.

In der Debatte um Migration und Asyl ist es oft schwierig, die Dimensionen und zeitlichen Entwicklungen zu veranschaulichen. Wer Migrationsbewegungen als Zahl darstellt läuft dabei Gefahr, menschenverachtenden Ideologien, durch die Abstrahierung von dem Schicksal der Menschen, Vorschub zu leisten. In einem Studienprojekt habe ich mit Komilitoninnen versucht, Daten des UNHCR aus dem Zeitraum 2000 – heute zugänglich zu machen, ohne dabei in die Falle der Entmenschlichung zu tappen.

How late is RE1?

The Regional Express 1 train line is frequently used by commuters travelling to and from Berlin. FHP students that live in Berlin will likely have made experience with the line in the past.

In december 2023 the lines ownership was transferred to ODEG, a private rail transportation company. The transfer sparked hope that it’s problems around capacity and delays would get solved. At least in the beginning, ODEG wasn’t able to live up to it’s expecations, as RBB reported.

I often travel on RE1 myself, so I gathered extensive experience with its delays. One day when I was in a particularly big hurry I realised I’d like to understand better how exactly the train is late.

Das Experiment hat sich als nützlichen Einstieg in Überlegungen zu juristischen Texten erwiesen. Ich habe, auch im Gespräch mit einem angehenden Juristen, einige Einblicke in die Lesegewohnheiten von Jurist:innen bekommen, die ich in einem nächsten Prototypen umsetzen würde.
